| School Battery Retrieval Competition 2011-2012 |
|
|
The Competition
Discarded batteries can
dangers to personal health and the environment.
Properly dispose them to keep dangerous chemicals such as mercury and cadmium out of our landfill.
Students will learn about the importance of battery recycling.
This program consists of training, collecting, and recycling of household
batteries. Schools in Markham will participate through a competition each school year.
|
Input from the school during the competition
Our EcoWatch personnel will work closely with your school. Before the competition start, our volunteers
will deliver the starter kit to the school and place the recycling bin to a location according to application form.
The starter kit contains all the necessary information and accessories that you will need throughout the competition.
The only input we need during the competition is a contact (either a teacher or student) to inform us once the recycling
bin is being fill up.
Then we will arrange a pick-up and deliver the collected batteries to the
hazardous waste treatment plant. At the end of the competition,
the winning school (based on average battery weight collected per student), will be rewarded and recognized
for their efforts.

Instructions and Guideline
To minimize the duration of keeping the used batteries in the schools,
we will be partnering with Call2Recycle to collect the used batteries.
- The school will receive a durable paper recycle box at the begining of the school year
- The school can call the Purolator pick-up number once the box is filled up
- The Purolator will pick-up the batteries and replace the recycle box with a new box
- The weight of the batteries will be calculated automatically with the information on the box
- The batteries will be shipped to the recycling facility for seperation and recycling
If you have any questions or suggestions to the program, please feel free to contact us.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
During the school year, we will be answering all questions we received from the schools in this section.
-
Q: Last year we recycled all received batteries. The box that arrived this year says that we should only be receiving rechargeable batteries. Is that correct? That we can only accept rechargeable batteries?
A: No, for our recycling program, we will continue to collect both alkaline and rechargeable household batteries, and our partnering battery recycler (Call2Rcycle) will support our program to recycle non-rechargeable batteries.
-
Q:There are plastics bags provided, what are they used for?
A:The plastics bags are provided to separate and to protect ourselves from the chemicals inside the rechargeable batteries. Such as cell phone batteries.
